What is Lip Lift Surgery?
Despite the importance of the lips in the aesthetics of the face as a whole, they are often not given the importance they deserve when considering facial rejuvenation. There is a tendency to treat the lips only with fillers or neuromodulators, when they can benefit from certain surgical techniques.
Today, we have two lip rejuvenation techniques available, which are the Lip Lift (indirect lip lift) and the vermilion advancement or direct lip lift.
Types of Surgery
Lip Lift
The lip lift is intended to shorten the length of the lip that is too long. That is to reduce the distance between the subnasal and vermilion point. At the same time it rotates the vermilion outward, increasing its thickness. Depending on the lip lift design, we reduce not only the central area of the lip but also the lateral area. The incision is hidden in the alar sulcus of the nose and inside the nostrils. The stitches are removed after 7 days. The scar is practically imperceptible in this area and the result is immediate.
Vermilion or direct lip lift advancement
In this design, 2-3 mm of skin adjacent to the vermilion is removed, advancing the vermilion outward. The scar is concealed in the alba line of the lip. It is indicated when the lip length is normal but the amount of exposed vermilion is scarce and the lip is too thin. The sutures used are very fine and magnifying glasses are needed to see them. The stitches are removed after 7 days. The scar is practically imperceptible in this area and the result is immediate.
Surgical Steps
Both direct lip lift and vermilion advancement (indirect lp lift) are surgeries that can be performed under local anesthesia if performed as the only surgery. They are often part of an overall facial rejuvenation, and are performed in conjunction with a facelift and blepharoplasty. In such a case we usually recommend intravenous sedation as an anesthetic technique.

What lip surgery techniques do we perform?
We perform lipofilling (filling with the patient’s own fat), lip lifts (shortening the distance between the nose and the lip), lip reduction when there is excess mucosa, and follow-up visits for previous surgeries. Does lip surgery leave visible scars?
With a lip lift, the scar is hidden at the base of the nose, where it is very well concealed. With lipofilling, there are no visible incisions. In lip reduction surgery, the scar is located on the inner mucosa and is not visible when smiling. Meticulous technique and postoperative care are key to a natural-looking result.
How does surgery differ from hyaluronic acid fillers?
Hyaluronic acid fillers provide temporary volume (usually lasting between 6 and 12 months) and do not alter the shape of the lips. Surgery allows for lasting structural changes: altering the length, projection, or contour of the lip. The choice depends on the patient’s goals, which we assess during a no-obligation consultation.
What is the recovery process like after lip surgery?
Inflammation is at its peak during the first 3 days and decreases significantly starting in the first week. The final shape becomes apparent between 6 and 8 weeks, when the tissues have fully settled. We recommend a soft diet at first, careful oral hygiene, and avoiding strenuous activity and direct sun exposure during the first few weeks.
