Conventional Orthodontics in Barcelona

What Is Conventional Orthodontics?

It’s the classic orthodontic treatment with braces.

Depending on the patient’s aesthetic preferences, they can be gray (metal), which are the most visible, or transparent (ceramic or sapphire), which are more aesthetically pleasing.

The color of the bracket has nothing to do with the effectiveness of the treatment, since it is just as effective in both cases.

Braces are placed on the front of the teeth and are attached with a special cement.

It is not a painful treatment, as gentle, continuous forces are used.

With this type of orthodontic treatment, it’s best to avoid eating hard foods such as nuts, bread, gum, etc., since they can damage or dislodge the braces.

If the braces come loose repeatedly, it can cause the treatment to take longer than desired.

Things to Keep in Mind

Follow-up visits are usually once a month, and depending on the case, treatment typically lastsbetween 1 and 2 years. The duration of treatment depends on its complexity; it is shorter in mild or simple cases and longer in more complicated cases.

At some point during treatment, the patient may be asked to use intermaxillary elastics—those “stick-on” rubber bands that are meant to be worn at home. They come in different thicknesses, depending on the required strength.

It is very important to brush thoroughly after every meal, for a total of at least three times a day. There are special orthodontic toothbrushes, electric toothbrushes, interdental brushes, and oral irrigators that can be very helpful for daily oral hygiene.

Treatment Process

The process begins with a comprehensive orthodontic evaluation: photographs, an intraoral scan, X-rays, and a cephalometric analysis. The orthodontist designs the treatment plan, decides on the most appropriate option (metal or clear braces), and discusses the goals, timeline, and budget with you. During the first appointment for bracket placement, the teeth are prepared and the brackets are cemented in place, then connected by a wire. From there, we schedule visits every 4–6 weeks to build strength and monitor progress. If the case calls for it, we supplement the treatment with elastic bands, micro-screws, or other aids to optimize movement.

Recovery time

There is no surgical recovery period. During the first 3–7 days after placement, you may experience mild discomfort as your mouth adjusts, a sensation of pressure, and possible irritation from the brackets rubbing against the mucous membranes; these symptoms can be managed with mild pain relievers and orthodontic wax. After each monthly adjustment, you may experience sensitivity when chewing for 24–48 hours. Patients adapt quickly, and most describe the experience as much more bearable than they expected. Oral hygiene requires special attention, including the use of interdental brushes and regular professional cleanings.

Expected Results

The results become apparent gradually: within a few weeks, the first signs of progress are visible, and after 6–12 months, the changes are usually noticeable. At the end of treatment, the teeth are aligned, the bite is functional, and, often, the appearance of the lower face is improved. Long-term stability depends on the use of retainers. Metal braces remain, in many cases, the most effective and predictable option for complex cases. Today’s digital planning makes it possible to estimate movements with a high degree of accuracy.

Duration of treatment

The average duration of a comprehensive conventional orthodontic treatment is 18 to 24 months. Simple cases can be completed in 12–15 months. Surgical cases take 24–30 months. Appointments are scheduled every 4–6 weeks. After the appliance is removed, fixed lingual retainers are placed, and in many cases, a removable night guard is also prescribed. Follow-up visits are scheduled at 6 and 12 months. It’s a project that requires perseverance, but the results are very consistent when it’s done correctly.

Frequently Asked Questions About Conventional Orthodontics

This type of orthodontic treatment involves fixed brackets on the outer surface of the teeth, connected by wires that apply controlled forces to align the teeth. We offer metal braces and aesthetic braces (ceramic or sapphire). At Clínica Birbe in Barcelona, this option remains highly versatile, especially in complex cases or when efficiency is a priority.

Metal braces are visible, but today they are smaller and more discreet than those of past generations. Aesthetic braces (ceramic or sapphire) blend in with the color of the teeth and are much less noticeable. If aesthetics are a priority, we can also consider lingual or clear aligners. Each option has specific advantages.

For comprehensive treatments, the average duration is 18 to 24 months. Mild cases may be resolved sooner, while surgical cases require a more comprehensive plan. Follow-up appointments are usually scheduled every 4–6 weeks. Consistent hygiene practices and the use of elastic bands when recommended are key to staying on schedule.

Generally speaking, no. You may experience mild discomfort during the first few days after the appliance is fitted and after each adjustment, which can be managed with mild pain relievers. The feeling of tightness goes away within 24 to 72 hours. If the braces cause chafing, protective waxes are used. If we anticipate more significant discomfort, we’ll discuss it with the orthodontist during the follow-up visit.
