What is blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty is the surgery that corrects the bags that may appear on the eyelids, it can be a consequence of the relaxation of the muscle and over the years the laxity of the skin is lost and causes them. It is a look rejuvenation surgery.
The maxillofacial surgeon, Dr. Birbe, medical director of Clínica BIRBE performs this treatment. The surgery is with local anesthesia but we recommend intravenous sedation for greater relaxation and tranquility of the patient.
Women and men aged 40 and over, who show excess skin or fat on the eyelids but who maintain a good facial structure. They are usually active people and therefore it is extremely annoying to wake up in the morning with a tired appearance that does not correspond to their good mood.
Types of blepharoplasty
Lower blepharoplasty
The surgery is usually performed transconjunctivally, that is, an incision of approximately one centimeter is made inside the eyelid, without cutting skin, to directly access the fat bags. Subsequently, the three compartments are searched and the bags are dried one by one, in their right quantity. Once these accumulations have been eliminated, the intervention is finished by putting a point on the conjunctiva or leaving it without suturing according to the surgeon’s preference, since it is an area that closes very easily. Another technique is the transposition of the fat balls. That is, we move them towards the area of dark circles, so that we blur the junction between eyelid and cheek, erasing the groove that marks the dark circles.
Superior Blepharoplasty
The amount of excess skin is painted on the skin and incisions are made at the limit of the natural fold of the upper eyelid, where the scar will be hidden. The excess skin spindle and a thin band of orbicularis muscle are then removed to locate the fat bags and remove the necessary amount. The skin is carefully closed again, suturing small internal stitches that will maintain tension. Finally, thin strips are placed to protect the scar until the stitches are removed, usually between four and seven days after the intervention.
Surgical Steps
In the first consultation, a comprehensive evaluation of your vision and your general health is carried out. Likewise, your daily habits are also analyzed (if you wear glasses or contact lenses, if you are a smoker, if you consume any type of medication, possible allergies, etc.), since they are factors that influence this study. Dr Birbe will also provide you with guidelines to follow during the weeks prior to the operation, in terms of diet and habits.
The surgery is performed in an operating room with local anesthesia or local anesthesia plus sedation, depending on each patient. A blepharoplasty intervention usually lasts approximately 1 hour 30 minutes for upper and lower eyelids and half an hour for upper eyelids.
The usual thing after eyelid surgery is that 90% of patients return to normal within a week. Recovery depends on different parameters of the eyelids as they evolve differently.
