Birbe Clinic and our extensive knowledge about facial trauma in Barcelona

Do you know what facial trauma is? When an accident causes an injury to the face, the patient has suffered facial trauma. In this case, there may be different ailments, such as bruises, tears, abrasions, cuts, wounds, or fractures to the jaw, maxillary bone, cheekbone, orbit or zygomatic arch. At Birbe Clinic, as specialists in facial trauma in Barcelona, we take care of patients who have suffered facial trauma, either when it occurs, i.e. primary facial trauma, or secondary trauma treatment, that is treatment of its sequelae.

Depending on the severity of the trauma, the patient will have to undergo one treatment or another. The maxillofacial surgeon is the professional with the greatest knowledge of facial anatomy. So, to solve the problem, he or she must know which parts of the face have been damaged, whether soft parts or facial bones, or both. A CT scan analyses is mandatory.

The causes of this trauma can be many: from a traffic accident , sports, or work accident to interpersonal violence or falls. Traumatisms in adults are usually  more severe. Children’s traumatisms are usually the result of falls that cause fractures to the nose, skin wounds or problems with the jaw bone. In general, a distinction is made between high-energy trauma (a gunshot wound or a high-speed accident) and low-energy trauma (a blow, a punch, for example).

Facial trauma: consequences and symptoms

traumatismo facial en Barcelona

Anyone who has suffered a facial trauma should consult a specialist in maxillofacial surgery, to carry out the least invasive treatment methods and to resolve the trauma.

The consequences of trauma are frequently:

  • Pain.
  • Infection.
  • Damage to the nervous system.
  • Loss of vision.
  • Bone irregularities or deformity.
  • Numbness
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Loss of teeth
  • Feeling of weakness.
  • Facial deformities

Consequently, the diagnosis carried out by different tests reveals the type of fracture or injury. Our methodology consists of evaluating facial polytrauma with a facial scanner. From here, it is important to properly define the pillars of the face and then reconstruct it, maintaining its dimensions.

On the other hand, it is crucial to intervene and treat the sequelae that may remain after a facial trauma. This is a very frequent occurrence in patients. Therefore, after three months, a radiological and clinical study is carried out, which will provide us information on the best treatment for each sequela.

Birbe Clinic, specialists in facial trauma: treatment and types of fractures

The three most frequent types of fractures are: nasal fractures, jaw fractures and malar fractures.

The first of these must be reduced immediately. The solution? Repositioning the nasal bone and nasal septum. In secondary nasal trauma deformities, rhinoplasty is the most appropriate treatment to achieve this. It consists of transforming the shape of the nose and improving respiratory function.

On the other hand, jaw fractures usually affect the teeth and the TMJ. Therefore, their treatment will depend on many factors: age, whether the fracture is open or closed, whether there are concomitant injuries, etc.

However, at Birbe Clinic we frequently reduce the fracture, with rigid fixation with titanium or resorbable mini-plates. In other cases, we perform other surgeries to solve this condition.

Finally, malar fractures can damage the orbit, causing diplopia, i.e. the patient’s vision is blurred. It can also influence the cheekbones, deforming them and cause numbness of the cheek.. But what method is used?

The most effective is to fix at least two of the three malar joints with mini-plates.

How is the recovery after a maxillofacial fracture?

Depending on what the operation was, the recovery time will vary. However, it is a comfortable and usually quick recovery. This is achieved thanks to the extensive experience of our team and the detailed diagnosis they carry out beforehand, using innovative and advanced methods. The incorporation of facial physiotherapy is also an aspect that helps to achieve a quick and easy postoperative period. Undoubtedly, carrying out a proper postoperative period will make recovery much easier.

How do I know if I have a maxillary fracture?

A fracture in this area causes bruising or haematomas, alteration in the occlusion of the teeth, changes in the sensitivity of the lips and cheek, and pain near the jaw, especially when speaking or moving the teeth. This means that people who suffer from this type of fracture can often lose teeth or have them broken. However, there are other symptoms, such as difficulty in breathing, loss of consciousness or memory, changes in vision, etc…
