Undergo a narrow palate surgery in Barcelona with Birbe Clinic

When the bone of the upper jaw is too narrow, much narrower than the lower jaw, we are dealing with a patient suffering from a narrow palate. It is normal for the upper jawbone to be wider than the lower jawbone, so that the oral functions are correct. For this reason, some patients come to our clinic to undergo narrow palate surgery in Barcelona to resolve this alteration.

The so-called ogival palate can be classified into three, that is to say, it can be expressed in three different ways. On the one hand, it can be in the form of a cross bite, when the back teeth on one side or both sides bite inwards and do not make good contact with the lower teeth. On the other hand, it can be in the form of a crowded teeth, as the teeth do not have enough space to erupt and, finally, the teeth are tilted inwards.

If this problem is detected early (when the child is developing and growing), this problem can be corrected without having to undergo surgery. However, if the patient has already developed, there is no other way to correct this alteration, it has to be with surgery, which is a more invasive treatment, but very effective.

At Birbe Clinic, we tell you about the causes and consequences of ogival palate in adults.

Cirugía de paladar estrecho en Barcelona

In the world of dentistry, we can find different causes that cause a person to suffer from a palate that is narrower than normal. As you know, on most occasions we can find a genetic, hereditary component. And in this case, it could not be any different. However, other factors such as atypical swallowing from an early age, incorrect breathing from infancy, harmful sucking habits or the premature loss of milk teeth can also be the cause of this malformation.

But what are the consequences for the patient? Well, we will show them to you below:

  • Problems and pain in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). By not having a correct bone structure in the joint that joins the jaws of our face, the patient may suffer from muscular pain, headaches or degenerative changes in this joint.
  • Periodontal problems. Gingivitis and periodontitis may be two diseases that are more prevalent in patients with poorly positioned teeth and malocclusion.
  • Respiratory difficulties. Apnoea or snoring a lot at night can be a consequence of the palate causing respiratory issues, as the nasal floor is also narrow, making it difficult for air to pass through.

Narrow palate surgery by the best professionals

If, after the diagnosis made by our professionals, it is confirmed that the adult patient suffers from this difficulty, surgery, as mentioned above, will be the only effective treatment to correct the width of the bone. But how is it carried out? Through a combination of maxillary surgery and orthodontics.

Previously, only orthognathic surgery could solve this problem. However, with innovation and technological advances, through maxillary surgery and a circuit breaker, we can achieve this objective more effectively.

SARPE stands for Surgically Assisted Rapid Palatal Expansion, a very minimally invasive treatment, at least much less invasive than orthognathic surgery, which is performed through a circuit breaker supported on the teeth and, through jaw surgery, expands the palate rapidly.

This operation is ideal for adults, people who have already made the development and cannot increase the size of their palate transversely with dental movement, as they have already finished their growth. On the other hand, children who are in the middle of their development can correct their width using a narrow palate appliance. We are talking about the palatal suture expander, a fixed system between the band and the band of the molars that expands the skeleton of the maxillary bone. It can also have a skeletal anchorage with miniscrews.

What is SARPE?

It is a technique that combines surgery with orthodontic treatment to correct a narrow palate. Thanks to this method, problems such as cross bite or dental crowding can be effectively solved. But what does it involve? Well, the patient, under local anesthesia and sedation, will be fitted with an appliance or suture expander, called RPE so that the surgeon can then make an osteotomy in the midline of the upper jaw, Le Fort I, to facilitate expansion.A few days after the operation, the patient will have to open the expander to reach the necessary dimension. After this step, orthodontic treatment must be carried out to put the teeth back in place.

When is it advisable to perform a narrow palate operation?

It is ideal for adults or for adolescents whose palatal suture has already been fused. Since children, having not yet developed the full growth of the palate and jaw, can, through orthodontics and a circuit breaker, move their teeth and enlarge the structure.Furthermore, if the adult patient not only suffers from this problem, but also has other alterations regarding the structural bone dimension, the solution will be to proceed to segmental orthognathic surgery.

What is the function of narrow palate orthodontics?

Orthodontics for narrow palate is ideal for children who have not yet finished forming and welding their bones. Up to about the age of twelve, the palate is made up of two halves, which are joined by the mid-palatal suture. This is a sheet of cartilage that can be easily shaped. This is where braces and the RPE, the expander that allows the palate to be opened and enlarged, come into play.
