Trust the best specialists in parotid surgery in Barcelona.

One of the parts of the salivary glands is the parotid gland, and it is located on both sides of the face, at the angle of the jaw, at the front and under the ear. It is responsible for producing more saliva in the body and for keeping the mouth lubricated. However, this gland can suffer from some pathologies that can be solved with our parotid surgery in Barcelona

The appearance of tumors (most of them benign), Sjörgen’s Syndrome (a disease of the immune system that destroys the salivary and lacrimal glands), parotiditis (mumps), bacterial infections, or inflammations are some of the pathologies that a person can suffer from in this area.

The presence of tumors is the most common case we treat in our clinic. But what are the causes of salivary gland tumors? Although the causes of salivary gland tumors are not entirely clear, it is thought that they may be:

  • Age: tumors usually appear in adults or elderly people. However, there have been clinical cases in infants.
  • Radiation: exposure to radiation increases the risk of gland tumors.
  • Bad habits: tobacco and alcohol are toxic substances, harmful to the body, which increase the risk of cancer or benign tumors in any area of the body.
  • Work in certain industries: recurrent contact with certain materials or in certain areas, such as asbestos mining or plumbing, can increase the chances of developing this disease.

Parotid tumor disease symptoms and treatments

Operación de parótida en Barcelona

The symptoms that appear when a person suffers from a tumor in this area are the following:

  • Difficulty in swallowing and eating.
  • Appearance of a lump in the neck, mouth, jaw or cheeks, in front of the ear.
  • Pain or numbness in the face.
  • Difficulty in moving the face, due to paralysis of the facial nerve within the parotid gland.

The diagnosis we carry out at Birbe Clinic must be anatomical, using an MRI or CT scan, and biological, employing a biopsy or a fine needle aspiration. Depending on the results of the tests, an appropriate treatment will be carried out.

Birbe Clinic, dedicated to parotid surgery

Through this surgery, also known as parotidectomy, we manage to remove the tumors that appear in the gland. After this removal, they must be analyzed to determine whether they are benign or malignant tumors, although most of them are not cancerous. Only 20% of tumors are malignant.

Depending on the tumor we deal with, its size and location, a different treatment will be necessary. However, parotidectomy is the most commonly used. This procedure is performed under general anesthesia and an incision is made from the preauricular area to the mandibular angle, like the incision used in facelifts.

The gland and the entire lesion are dissected, taking care not to damage the facial nerve. Once the operation is complete, drainage must be applied for between 24 and 48 hours, depending on each case, while the patient is hospitalized.

How do you know if you have a parotid tumor?

We advise you to schedule an appointment at our clinic when the patient experiences a lump near the salivary glands or the area is more swollen than normal. Although these symptoms are not synonymous with cancer, the patient may have benign tumors or other diseases that cause swelling of the salivary glands. However, it is crucial that the patient can come to the clinic quickly so that our specialists can make a proper diagnosis and apply the required treatment on the spot. For them, fine needle aspiration and nuclear magnetic resonance will give us a diagnosis of the type of lesion on the one hand and the extent of the lesion on the other.

What is the postoperative period after parotid gland surgery for a tumor?

Depending on the treatment carried out, the postoperative period will be different. There are two different postoperative periods: the immediate postoperative period, when the patient stays in hospital for one or two nights and returns to normal life after about two weeks.
