We tell you all about zygomatic implants in Barcelona

Zygomatic implants are those that, when a patient suffers severe atrophy in the maxillary bone. They are implanted in the cheekbone, also known as the zygoma or malar bone. Therefore, this technique is ideal for people who have lost part or all of their upper jawbone, that is the maxilla, or suffer from severe atrophy of the maxilla. Patients who have previously suffered severe periodontal problems can also undergo this method. At Birbe Clinic, we are specialists in zygomatic implants in Barcelona

Fast and effective treatments are the order of the day, especially when it comes to oral health and the aesthetics of our smile. However, there are patients who cannot solve their dental problems because they lack bone in which to place implants. This is the case of severely atrophied jaws, which undoubtedly represent a major issue.

One option for these patients is to undergo previous bone reconstruction operations with bone grafts in the atrophied part. It is an effective method, but it takes time, as the patient sometimes has to spend about a year in treatment before being able to enjoy the new prosthesis on implants. Typically bone reconstruction of the maxilla requires a first surgical approach for bone reconstruction, then a healing period of 6 months, then implant placement, around three months for dental implant osseointegration, and then prosthesis impressions, and placement. Total time between 9 and 12 months.

But then came the zygomatic implants, a great evolution that allows two to four long implants to be placed in the anterior area of the jaw, for those patients who because they do not have bone, cannot have conventional dental implants. With this placement, it is possible to recover the ability to chew and to obtain greater aesthetics in 24h. During surgery, after zygomatic implants placements, impressions are taken and the day after the dental prosthesis is in place.

Unlike conventional implants, these are fixed diagonally to the zygomatic bone (the bony arch of the cheekbone). This is why the size of these implants is longer: they measure 35 to 55 mm, while osseointegrated implants measure around  10 mm.

Advantages of placing a zygomatic implant with surgical technique

Implantes cigomáticos en Barcelona
  • We can solve severe cases with very atrophic jaws, which have no bone.
  • We avoid having to make bone grafts, a much longer and more uncomfortable treatment for the patient.
  • We speed up the prosthetic rehabilitation time. The teeth are in the mouth on the zygomatic implants in just 24 hours.
  • We improve the patient’s quality of life with this implant.
  • We guarantee excellent efficacy and validity.
  • We manage to rehabilitate the upper arch completely.
  • High acceptance by the patient because it is a shorter treatment, although with a more complex surgery.
  • The placement of the zygomatic implants is performed under intravenous sedation.

Pterygoid and zygomatic implants by Birbe Clinic

Do you know the difference between these two implants, which are placed in patients with severe bone loss? Both are made of the same material, titanium, as it is a material that the body does not reject and accepts perfectly. But the difference between them is undoubtedly the way they are placed.

The pterygoid implant is placed in the pterygoid process of the sphenoid bone, a bone that makes up the skull. The zygomatic implant, on the other hand, is placed in the malar, a cheekbone. Basically, the pterygoid implant is a conventional implant that receives this name due to the position in which it is placed, while the zygomatic implant is a different implant to conventional implants, and is placed in a bone where there is normally no tooth: the zygoma or malar. From this bone, it extends into the mouth, where we have teeth.

The two implants are very effective, and in a non-invasive surgery, which does not produce external scars and has a short duration. Thanks to this placement, the patient can safely smile again within a day.

What is the price for zygomatic implants?

There is no fixed budget, everything will depend on the severity of the patient's problem, whether there is partial or total bone loss and, therefore, on the number of implants to be placed. For this reason, it is necessary for our experts to be able to make a demanding and thorough diagnosis to see what the patient needs.

What is a zygomatic bone fracture?

It is a fracture of the bone that forms the cheekbone of the face. It would be located between the zygomatic bone and the lower part of the temporal bone, near the TMJ. This fracture causes pain, bruising, oedemas, and limits the movement of that part of the face.

What difficulties do zygomatic implants cause patients?

Some cases related to zygomatic implants are usually pain, swelling, and bleeding. However, there are other more serious cases that may suffer from sinusitis, zygomatic nerve paresthesia or peri-implantitis. In the vast majority of cases, patients are perfectly well after the operation.
